Project Tiger

Tigers are well known for their immense strength and power. They are known to bring down animals weighing almost ten times their own weight and then dragging them away to shelter. A tiger itself weighs between 130 - 180kgs. A tiger will hunt all kinds of game including baby elephant, gaur, deer, wild pig, and porcupines.  Occasionally it is also known to kill leopards and other tigers, but these are more chance encounters than natural prey.  Sunder bans tigers have beautifully adapted, and feed on crab, tortoises and other salt water creatures.  Tigers often come into conflict with humans when they upon cattle. India contains 60% of the world's tigers; as recently as 1970 it was still legal to hunt them and to export skins. During the 1950s and early 1960s it is recorded that more than 3,000 tigers lost their lives to trophy hunters, most of these being tourists. This jolted the concerned authorities and some serious thought went into devising plans to save the tiger. The result was the launch of "Project Tiger" in 1972 at the Dhikala Forest Rest House in Corbett National Park. The main idea behind the project was to provide safe havens for tigers where they could flourish as a species and hopefully reverse the startling decline in their population. More ....
